Remembering the Fallen: Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day and it is important to remember those who lost their lives in service to their county as they fought for our freedoms.

At a time when our country is so divided, it is still important for children to understand the freedoms we have as a nation and how those were obtained.

Remembering the fallen doesn’t have to be about political views or views on our military presence around the world. Those are discussions for another day.

To help talk about Memorial Day with the young, here are a few resources that I found.

Parents

The Military Wife & Mom

More 4 Kids

I looked at several resources and enjoyed these three a great deal. I like some of the ideas mentioned: discuss the history behind the day, attend a parade, discuss how to fly the American flag, make a patriotic craft or dessert, visit with a Veteran, etc.

Here are a few handprint ideas to get you started:

This is a handprint patriotic flag from an Oriental Trading kit. Feel free to browse Oriental Trading for other ideas, as well.

Here is another handprint craft. It’s an American Eagle. To learn how to make the eagle, simply visit My Mommy Style here.

I hope you and your family enjoy a Happy Memorial Day together!

Be safe and be well!
